CO-CURRICULAR ELIGIBILITY

The intent of this policy is to encourage all students to recognize the central importance of academic success, citizenship and a healthy lifestyle as prerequisites to co-curricular participation.  Co-curricular activities shall be defined as all activities sponsored by the school and supervised by school personnel.

Academics

To be eligible to participate in co-curricular activities at Penquis Valley School in grades 9-12, a student must be passing all of his or her classes.  In grades 7-8, a student may fail one, but no more than one class, and still be eligible to participate in co-curricular activities.  In addition, a student in grades 7 or 8, may not fail the same class in consecutive quarters and be eligible for co-curricular activities.  Grade 6 students must have no more than one grade below the “partially meets the standard” expectation on the most recent report card.

Grades will be reported at the end of each quarter and an eligibility list will be generated by the Guidance Office, and double-checked by the Athletic Director and building Principal before being released to the student body.  Eligibility for the fall season will be determined by grades earned in the 4th quarter of the previous school year.

Co-curricular eligibility is determined by the posted grade and in no case, other than computational error, will eligibility status be changed.  An “Incomplete” grade, for purposes of co-curricular eligibility, shall be considered a failure until that incomplete becomes a 70 or higher.  Any class that is dropped outside of the “add-drop” period shall count as the grade earned at the time the class was dropped for eligibility purposes.

Attendance

In order to participate in an activity, a student must be in attendance all day on the day of the activity or have an excused absence.  State law lists the following reasons as excused:  personal illness; an appointment with a health professional that must be made during the regular school day; observance of a recognized religious holiday when the observance is required during the regular school day; a family emergency; or a planned absence for a personal or educational purpose which has been approved.  In no case shall a student whose absence is unexcused for any part of the day of the activity be allowed to participate in that day’s activity.

Suspension from school shall render the student ineligible for participation in co-curricular activities during the period of suspension.
